techARTS for Girls

About the Program:

Founded by new media artist and professor, Mary Flanagan in 1999, techARTS  for Girls is a community action project to encourage girls from the city of Buffalo and Erie County to learn about and use computers.

Class meetings are held at Squeaky Wheel located at 712 Main Street, where girls come to work with computer and media professionals from different fields. During that time they are taught fun, exciting computer programs by Squeaky Wheel staff and volunteers. Girls then work individually and in teams to produce digital artwork, self-portraits and record sound.

At one to two meetings per session, a guest woman computer scientist or artist utilizing technology will speak and answer questions about why she chose her field. This program offers nationally known artists and technologists the opportunity to act as members.
